Child Care Subsidy

Subsidized Child Care Assistance administers State and Federal funds to help working families in Ashe County better afford the cost of child care. These funds also enable families to further their education, help teen parents stay in school and support parents re-entering and remaining in the workforce.

We Can Provide Help

We can provide help with child care for the following reasons:

  • To support a caregiver’s employment.
  • To support a caregiver’s education and training.
  • To support a preschool age child’s developmental needs.
  • To support child protective services.
  • To support family reunification or assist families in crisis, including those who may be victims of domestic violence.

How to Apply

Subsidized Child Care Assistance is housed in the DSS suite at the Ashe County Court House. Clients may apply in person Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm. While walk-ins are welcome, appointments are encouraged. Interested parents may contact a social worker at 846-5719 to make an appointment.

If the demand for subsidy is greater than available funding, the family will be placed on a waiting list. Once funding is available, families will be contacted and given the opportunity to apply.

How Does Subsidized Child Care Assistance Work?

Eligible families will receive a voucher for assistance with the cost of child care. Parents must pay a portion of the day care cost. This parent fee is equal to 10% of the family’s gross income. Caregivers will be informed of the amount of the parent fee and its start date at the time of application. For most families, the fee is considerably lower than the full cost of childcare.

Can I Choose My Own Day Care?

The state of North Carolina requires that all child care facilities which receive subsidy be state-licensed and earn either a three, four or five star rating. Each family may select the day care of their choice as long as the selected day care meets these requirements and agrees to accept child care subsidy.
