Temporary assistance for needy families (TANF)

TANF offers a variety of programs, including Work First, which are designed to meet a family's needs and support or encourage self-sufficiency.


In order to be eligible for TANF, applicants must:


  • Have a dependent child that meets age, kinship, and citizenship requirements;
  • Meet program-specific income guidelines.

Services are designed to support job retention and advancement.

 Services include:

  • Job Search;
  • Education;
  • Skills Training;
  • Transportation;
  • Work-related Expenses.

Emergency Assistance

Assistance is designed to help with a family's sporadic emergency needs.


Assistance may include:

  • Payments to prevent utility cutoff;
  • Payment of electric and water deposits;
  • Rental assistance;
  • Assistance with rent deposits.

Emergency Assistance may only be received one time in a 12-month period. Maximum annual benefit is $300.00.

Benefit Diversion

Benefit Diversion

Benefit diversion is a one-time, lump-sum payment designed to meet a specific family crisis or episode of need. Income guidelines apply.  Candidates may include:

  • Applicants likely to receive a job offer;
  • Applicants who are employed and need assistance until the first check is received;
  • Applicants who are likely to begin work within three months;
  • Families with a caretaker who is sick or out on maternity leave, receiving little or no pay.

Work First

Work First is family driven, family focused, and family friendly.


Work First recipients are required to participate in certain activities in order to receive a benefit.  These activities may include:

  • Job Search/Readiness;
  • Community Services;
  • Vocational Training;
  • Education
